Rewind Exhibition Catalogue

Preparations for the catalogue to accompany my forthcoming solo exhibition, 'Rewind', at Art Bermondsey Project Space, London are well underway. It's a 32pp catalogue with 15 images, and is beginning to look really splendid.

A few weeks ago, the images were sent to State Media magazine who are kindly designing it for the show. Anna McNay has completed a critical essay about my work that will be included in the catalogue - informative and beautifully written. Plus I have supplied a few extracts from my memoir, 'Art, Life and Everything', which will also be included.

Last week we were proofing the text and artwork. This week it goes off to Arts Council of England for approval before finally being sent off to the printers. With only three weeks to go before the show opens, it is all very exciting and now I can't wait to see the catalogue in print!

Julie Umerle: Rewind

Naples Orange. 2013. Acrylic on canvas. 135 x 135 cm.

Rewind: Julie Umerle

Paintings and works on paper by London-based artist Julie Umerle whose approach to art has recently been described by New York Arts Magazine as a "new way of thinking with abstract painting".  At Rewind, Art Bermondsey Project Space is showing a a solo exhibition of her latest works: large-scale paintings, a series of smaller canvases and a series of works on paper.

The Rewind series is characterised by unprimed canvases, emphasising the simplicity of the image. The most immediate element of the work is actually the object itself, positioned very close to the edges of the canvas. Her series, Transoxide, was developed on wet stretched paper, where coloured grounds were layered with white paint and marks of black ink. The pressure of the brush, the viscosity of the paint and the speed of application are just some of the variables that play a part in her mark-making process.

“Julie Umerle’s paintings exist at the meeting point of decision and accident, as indeed do our lives.” Mark Westall, FAD Magazine.

Julie Umerle
Julie Umerle is an American-born artist raised in London. She studied fine art at Falmouth University, Cornwall, and graduated from Parsons School of Design, New York in 1998 with a MFA in painting. She then lived and worked between London and New York for a further five years. She is currently based in London. Her work has been included in major group shows such as 'British Abstract Art' at Flowers Galleries; the Royal Academy’s ‘Summer Exhibition’; ‘London Art Fair’; and '
Contemporary British Painting' at The Crypt Gallery, Marylebone. Her most recent solo show, 'Cosmos or Chaos', was held at studio1.1 in Redchurch Street. Exhibitions in the USA include 'Generations' at AIR Gallery, NYC; 'Night of 1000 Drawings' at Artists Space, NYC; 'Postcards from the Edge' at Metro Pictures, NYC; as well as Art Miami, Florida (Caridi Gallery). She has also shown in Paris and Berlin.

Rewind is funded by Arts Council England. A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition with an essay by Anna McNay.

Arts Council England Award

In January this year, I won a Grants for the Arts Award from Arts Council England.

I am delighted to receive this award: it is a rare achievement, especially for a painter. Such grants are extremely competitive in the current economic climate with the recent cuts to the Art Council's budget. The award will make a huge difference to my practice in 2015 and what I am able to achieve, as well as giving me great self confidence in my work. Thanks go out to all my friends and colleagues for your good wishes and congratulations.

This award is for professional development and will fund a period of research and development within my practice, enabling me to create new paintings. I have already made a detailed plan as to how I intend to develop my work and have outlined a budget of materials and a timeline to pursue. 2015 is going to be an extremely productive year where I will be able to paint under optimum conditions.

Now it is all about achieving results and making the most of the support I have been given at this time. I will keep you posted as my project develops.

First exhibition of 2015

Drift. 2013. 54 x 60 in. © Julie Umerle
Getting the New Year off to a fine start! I'll be exhibiting one of my paintings, Drift, in the exhibition 'Present Tense' at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery from 14 January - 18 April 2015. It will be the first time this painting has been displayed in a gallery.

'Present Tense' showcases contemporary painting and photography featuring more than 40 works from the Swindon collection including works by Lisa Milroy, Magnus Quaife, Steven Pippin, Maggi Hambling, Tony Bevan, Eileen Cooper and Julie Umerle among others. The exhibition challenges the idea that contemporary art is elitist or incomprehensible. Starting with the fall of the Berlin Wall and looking at history and society, the exhibition investigates the way artists continue to react to the world around them and create new realities.

Through painting and photography, the exhibition will examine how everyday life, place, memory and repetition influence contemporary British art.

The exhibition showcases painting and photography produced since 1990s and in the collection of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.

Three group shows

I'm pleased to announce that I have three group shows opening before the end of the year. These shows are all in connection with the collective 'Contemporary British Painting' and a wonderful opportunity to get my work out into the world.

For those who follow my blog, you may remember that I wrote earlier this year in August about the 'Priseman-Seabrook collection of 21st Century British Painting'. The first showing of this collection of over sixty works, which includes one of my paintings, is at Huddersfield Art Gallery from 1st November 2014 - 14th March 2015. This exhibition is called 'Contemporary British Painting'. A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition, available through Amazon.

The second show is at Ipswich Art School Gallery from 15th November 2014 - 8th March 2015. This exhibition is called 'Paint Britain', with thirty-six participating artists.

The third show is at St Marylebone Crypt in London from 8th December 2014 to 4th January 2015, and is called 'Contemporary British Painting'. This is the group's annual christmas exhibition.

I hope you will be able to visit one or more of these exhibitions. At least now I'll be able to give a good response when people ask me where they can see my paintings!

Deutsche Bank

As well as having my paintings purchased by private collectors, my work is also part of several public collections and that's what I'm writing about today.

New collectors of my work this year include Madison Museum of Fine Art in the USA and Swindon Museum in the UK. I have just started to have my work acquired by museums and I'm delighted to be part of their permanent collections. I've posted pictures of these paintings in earlier blogs.

Perhaps the best known of my corporate collectors is Deutsche Bank who have an extremely strong collection of works by artists including Gerhard Richter (one of my favourite painters). I am very proud to be part of their London collection.

Here are two of the paintings which were purchased by Deutsche Bank some years ago:

It's so interesting after you finish a painting to discover where the work ends up and to know who sees it. Many of my works have found homes in the most extraordinary places and I am always happy to hear from people who contact me after seeing the paintings, often many years after they've left the studio.

Priseman-Seabrook Collection

I am delighted to announce that 'Eclipse' is now part of the Priseman-Seabrook Collection of 21st Century British Painting.

Eclipse. Oil/acrylic on canvas.
© Julie Umerle

Here is a short descriptive piece about the painting that I have written for the catalogue:

I am interested in exploring the physicality of paint, making paintings that exist at the meeting point of decision and accident. Eclipse replaces brush strokes with the direct interaction of liquid elements on canvas. Alternately layering oil and acrylic, a reaction is produced between the two mediums that is a by-product of the materials. The interaction of the materials, together with the effects of gravity, activates the surface.

The breakdown and falling apart of the surface, where layers of oil and acrylic pull against each other and don't quite hold the ground, is what interests me. I want the work to contain an element of disintegration or measure of disorder which threatens to disrupt any attempt at a complete reading. The way that the edge is wrapped, or the internal gravity of the painting disrupted by turning the canvas in the making of the work, contributes to that sense of dislocation.

The Priseman-Seabrook Collection highlights work produced by artists practicing in Britain in the 21st Century. The first showing of the collection will be at Huddersfield Art Gallery later this year. The collection will be exhibited there from November 2014 - March 2015. A catalogue of the exhibition is available on.Amazon.

Brick Lane Art Auction 2014

This year, I have donated a piece of  work to the Brick Lane Art Auction, a charity auction which takes place on Thursday July 24th 2014 in the upstairs room of Beach Blanket Babylon in Bethnal Green, East London.

The Auction includes a rich mix of eclectic artists and designers including Vivienne Westwood, Jamie Reid and Gavin Turk who have all generously donated their work. It will showcase an expansive and unique selection of works (many original) 'from the bleeding edge of contemporary global counter culture'.

This is the second year the Brick Lane Art Auction has taken place in conjunction with the Brick Lane Village Fete (at St Matthews Church on Sunday July 27th). The event will raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis and seeks to raise money to help Chris McMuck, Shoreditch club promoting legend and entrepreneur, who suffers from the disease. Money raised from the event will go towards supporting Chris in engaging with a programme of holistic and alternative healthcare practices. It will also benefit Ability Bow Gym, a local, wheelchair-accessible gym of which I am a member.

This is the painting I have donated: 'Summer Painting II'.

All proceeds go to a worthy cause so please support this fundraiser. Doors open at 6pm. The event continues until 11.30pm with the auction taking place at 8pm.

It's a silent auction and all money raised will go to charity. Last year's event was a resounding success and I am sure this year's will be too if we all get out there to support it.

Review of New Work

'Red/Violet', Acrylic on canvas, 60 x 60 in.

Julie Umerle: New Paintings

"The first thing I noticed when looking at these works, was the utter frankness about their construction. They exist by virtue of their process, yet this is not a process painting from 1970. Rather, there appears to be a new way of thinking with abstract painting. It lies in asking the epistemological question: "What can paint do as a material abstracted from its support?"

Julie Umerle’s process explores several layers of cognition, setting up conditions for chance, and responding to the natural physicality of paint itself. After all, paint is an inherently expressive medium. Her decision making process highlights how far the accident will go to create an interesting material surface. Umerle arrives at her imagery via a hyper formalism that makes no distinction between medium, surface, and support. The formal apparatus is gravity’s gesture, its pull downwards. Illusionistic depth is achieved by the layering of the medium, which is an interesting nod to history. The physicality of the layers bears a relationship to the Baroque curtain; here it is a curtain that is divided into strands of acrylic. It has the effect of suspending time, as the paint tends to conceal and reveal, stretching away from the viewer into infinite space. This is especially the case in a stunning work like Red/Violet. It is primarily the color, vermillion and purple, that effuses a sense of shimmering intensity, blurring any focal point.

In a way, this work serves as a record of time and space, both complimenting each other in equal parts. In an exciting fashion, these two distinct aspects of a painting coalesce into a structure that is both familiar and strange."
